Spenders cash in on weather

Last week’s heatwave may have triggered a mini spending boom after the UK’s cash machine network reported its busiest day of the year.

The Link network said £577m was withdrawn on Friday as Britons got ready to enjoy the sunshine. Chief executive John Howells added: “The good weather really seems to have encouraged people to withdraw cash in preparation for increased spending over an unusually sunny weekend.”

Link said the busiest time on Friday was just after midday as people made lunchtime withdrawals.

Retail experts last week feared that the unseasonal weather would deter shoppers from buying autumn and winter fashions.

The bumper withdrawal was the biggest daily total since last Christmas Eve and 14 per cent more than the same day last year.

Link said Sunday was also particularly busy as £252m was withdrawn.
