Spirited performance from artist returning to his roots

GHOSTS carved from polystyrene and paintings on the back of second-hand doors are some of the eclectic exhibits in a new show by one of South Yorkshire’s most admired contemporary artists.

The work, by Kid Acne, who lives in Sheffield, makes up his first solo exhibition in his home city , where he is better-known for large-scale outdoor murals.

Hosted by the city’s Millennium Gallery, the show, called Kill Your Darlings, also includes comic books, record sleeves, flyers and screen prints, as well commercial commissions such as skateboard graphics and vinyl toys.

The artist said: “It’s great to have my first solo show in my home town at the Millennium Gallery. It’s good to have a chance to revisit some of my back catalogue, and I’m really looking forward to showing the new work I’ve made for the exhibition.”

Rowena Hamilton, curator of craft and design at Museums Sheffield, was installing some of the work yesterday and said: “Kid Acne has built an impressive international reputation but still keeps his roots firmly in South Yorkshire.

“It’s great to celebrate the success of home grown talent and we’re thrilled to host Kid Acne’s first Sheffield solo exhibition.”

Kill Your Darlings opens with a free launch party at the gallery on Friday and runs until October 23. Entry is free.
