The outfit belonged to Sheffield-born Chief Yeoman of the Guard Cyril Taylor and is one of the pieces on display as part of Colour Coded, a new exhibition which opens on Saturday.

A spokesman for Museums Sheffield said: “Today we can synthetically match almost any shade imaginable, but our use of colour was once reliant on expensive natural sources for dyes and pigments. Colour Coded will examine how colourful became commonplace, showcasing a range of household objects from the city’s social history collection including fashion, textiles, toys and homeware.”

Colour Coded runs until January.
