A POPULAR leisure centre has been saved from immediate closure after city councillors stepped in to run the facility.

Sheffield Council has agreed to fund the Wisewood Sports Centre, previously part of the former Forge Valley School, while the search for a permanent buyer continues. Tapton Academy Trust has been criticised by the local authority for refusing to continue to run Wisewood when it takes over the secondary.

Council leaders are due to hold talks over the next week to decide on the next step for the centre’s staff, who are currently employed by Forge Valley.

Coun Jackie Drayton said: “It is extremely frustrating that the future of the centre has been put in jeopardy because of the decision by Tapton Academy.”
