WHEN IT comes to sprout eating, Yorkshire is top of the table - with eight of the ten biggest sprout eating towns and cities in the UK being in the region.

Doncaster is the country’s sprout capital, according to Leeds-based supermarket Asda, which sold a staggering 113,040 sprouts in its store in the town over the last week.

Chapeltown in Sheffield was the store with the second highest sprout count, which shoppers munching through an astonishing 112,140, the equivalent of 11 sprouts for every person.

The Kingswood store in Hull was third, with Wakefield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Pudsey, and Glasshoughton also featuring in the top ten

Sprouts appear to be a real turn off in Lancashire which has four towns in the UK’s bottom 10 and also in the Midlands which has three towns in the bottom.

Andy Wareham, Asda’s vegetable buyer, said: “Love them or hate them, the humble sprout is an integral part of the Christmas dinner and our customers will buy a massive 97.1 million of them this Christmas.”
