Square to celebrate improvements

Trafalgar Square in Scarborough is celebrating victory in its battle to rid the community of anti-social behaviour and further improve the area.

In 2005, the Square made national headlines after the Yorkshire Post revealed that residents had been unable to hold a street party to mark Trafalgar Day because of troublemakers. Residents decided to take a stand and in subsequent years RAFTS (Residents and Friends of Trafalgar Square) turned the tide on drug dealing, alcohol abuse and anti-social behaviour which had dragged down the neighbourhood.

On Sunday the Square is staging a Victory for Trafalgar Square event from noon to 4pm. It follows a grant last October of 29,219 of Lottery funding for further improvements to the Square including benches, raised flower beds, bins and welcome signs.

The ribbon cutting will be by retired head of Scarborough Street Scene Bernard Goulding.
