Stadium bid for Tigers
in £135m scheme

a planning application has been submitted for a new rugby league stadium for Castleford Tigers and a retail development which could create 2,000 jobs with Next as the anchor tenants.

The plans have been submitted by developer Lateral Property Group to Wakefield Council for its proposed Five Towns Park development at Castleford.

The £135m development comprises a 10,000-capacity community stadium for Castleford Tigers, a 50-acre country park and a 53,000 square metre retail development on land next to Junction 32 of the M62.

Subject to gaining planning consent, the development would create 2,000 new full-time jobs, according to Lateral Property Group.

Lateral say Next will occupy a 6,500 square metre site for a Next Home and Garden store.

Dominic O’Rourke, group property director of Next, said: “Five Towns Park presents a superb opportunity for us to continue the roll-out of our new Next Home & Garden stores.”

Philip Lunn, managing director of Lateral Property Group, said: “The news that Next has signed-up to the proposed Five Towns Park is a massive vote of confidence for the Five Towns area.”

He said they were in ‘ongoing discussions’ with other companies who are interested in Five Towns Park and more announcements are expected soon.

Mr Lunn said: “After almost three months of public consultation, we have now submitted our planning application for Five Towns Park to Wakefield Council.

“We have received over 1,400 feedback responses with 86 per cent of those in support of the proposals.

“We would like to thank everyone for their feedback.

“As a result of the consultation, we have made a number of amendments to the scheme, such as introducing local match day parking controls, improving public transport links to the site and putting a roof on the north stand of the stadium.”

He said Next was one of a number of retailers to express interest in the scheme.

Lateral aims to be on site in summer 2015 with completion of the project anticipated in 2017.
