Stage set for theatre boss doctorate

AN HONORARY doctorate is set to be awarded to Daniel Evans, artistic director of Sheffield Theatres.

Mr Evans will be given the accolade at a ceremony in November by Sheffield Hallam University for his “development of an award-winning programme of events that has seen the city attract some of the best-known names in theatre”.

The Crucible’s production of Othello last autumn, starring The Wire actors Clarke Peters and Dominic West, who was awarded an honorary doctorate from the university in 2010, was especially successful.

Hallam Professor of English Lisa Hopkins nominated Mr Evans for the award.

She said: “Daniel has made Sheffield Theatres one of the most successful theatres in the UK – demonstrated by a significant number of Theatrical Management Association regional theatre award nominations, and the fantastic reviews the plays have had in national media.”
