Star eatery loses battle over name

A top London restaurant popular with the rich and famous will have to change its name after losing a trademarks battle.

The Court of Appeal ruled that Cipriani London, a favourite of celebrities including Elton John, Naomi Campbell and David and Victoria Beckham, is in breach of trademarks owned by a company behind the luxury Hotel Cipriani in Venice.

Lord Justice Lloyd said the Italian hotel was established by the grandfather of the owner of the London restaurant, who are both named Guiseppe Cipriani.

But Hotel Cipriani, now a part of the Orient Express group, holds trademarks for the word Cipriani.

The restaurant owner defended the case by insisting he was using his own name.
