Stargazers to help unlock the mysteries of the night sky

YORKSHIRE’S oldest working observatory has been chosen to host the regional event of an annual stargazing television showcase to uncover the mysteries of the night sky.

A battery of telescopes will be set up in York’s Museum Gardens and the city’s observatory will be open for the free event as part of the BBC’s Stargazing Live programmes next week.

The three-night series on BBC Two is aimed at helping people glean a better understanding of the night sky after the hugely popular inaugural national event was staged last year.

This year’s programmes will see Professor Brian Cox and Dara O Briain broadcast live from the control room of the Jodrell Bank Observatory.

The presenters will tackle a range of issues such as why the moon causes tides on earth as well as the origins of black holes.

During the York event, a Space Bus will be in the Museum Gardens for a range of children’s activities, and the Yorkshire Museum will also be open with space-themed talks and family events.

There will be an exhibition on Mars and astronomer Martin Lunn and members of the York Astronomical Society will also help people learn more about outer space.

The free event in York will be held on Tuesday next week from 6pm until 9.30pm.
