But that's exactly what happened to Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop, a member of the Los Tidiots team, after his car broke down on the way to Skipton from London on Friday night.

Mr Buchanan-Dunlop was forced to hitch lifts and catch buses through the night to make the 8am start on Saturday, eventually embarking on the 62-mile walk after just 90 minutes' sleep. "It was a real endurance thing," he said after finishing at about 9am yesterday. "It was okay, although I was basically hallucinating at one point. I was asking the others if there really was a dog eating buttercups in the field. Apparently there wasn't."

Team mate Nick Worsley, a barrister from Leeds, said: "It was brilliant, a really good laugh. You keep yourselves going through sheer bloody-mindedness and lots of verbal abuse. We'll definitely be giving it another go next year."
