Statement due on four-letter posting priest

SENIOR clergy are today expected to make a further announcement about their investigation into a complaint made about a vicar who swore in messages posted on social networking site Facebook.

Bishop of Doncaster Peter Burrows met Canon Paul Shackerley, the priest in charge of Doncaster Minster, yesterday after the Yorkshire Post revealed his four-letter internet outbursts.

Last night the bishop said: “It’s an HR matter because Paul is an employee and we are going through an HR process at the moment in the light of my meeting with him. We will be having further discussions and I will be better able to comment on Friday.”

Dr Shackerley found himself at the centre of the row after a formal complaint was made to top clerics and other officials about his use of Facebook and language which was labelled “abhorrent for a man in his position”.
