A MASTERPLAN is being drawn up for Monkhill rail station in Pontefract.

Wakefield Council and Metro have created the station masterplan which includes ideas for improvements at the station which it is hoped will be completed by the end of the month.

These include: refurbishment of the car park; creation of around 50 additional car parking spaces; covered cycle parking; enhanced CCTV and improved lighting and signing.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: “I am delighted to say that, along with our partner Metro, we are working on drafting a blueprint for the railway station at Monkhill.

“We are nearing the completion of the draft blueprint and hope we can provide further information towards the end of March,” Coun Jeffery added.

Longer term improvements could potentially include the refurbishment of the footbridge, improved passenger waiting facilities, an improved access road and a bridge to provide a link through the Malthouse site to Ferrybridge Road.
