Steam and vintage rally gears up for its 21st anniversary weekend

ONE of the oldest vehicles taking part in a vintage rally this weekend was given an airing yesterday.

Chairman of the East Riding Engine Club, Harold Bell, will be driving from his home in Leven, near Hull,to the Driffield Steam and Vintage Rally in his 1908 Stanley Model M steam car.

A number of rarities are appearing at this year's event, including a 1922 Stanley 740D, thought to have been owned by one of the mobsters in the Bugs Moran gang. Seven gang members were gunned down in the St Valentine's Day Massacre in Chicago in 1929, reputedly on the orders of Al Capone.

The vehicle is currently being restored by retired steelworker Richard Marriott in Brigg, who said: "We've looked for bullets but can't find any."

The event will mark the 21st anniversary of its organiser the East Riding Engine Club as well as the Steam Car Club of Great Britain. Also on show will be an advanced Doble Model E22 steam car, made around 1925 and previously owned from new by the reclusive American multi-millionaire Howard Hughes.

On Saturday evening more than 100 steam tractors and vintage cars will leave Driffield Showground to motor into the town centre. The club is hoping to raise 2,100 for Yorkshire Cancer Research, 100 for every year it has been in existence.
