Steaming into the past

Iconic engines and vintage cars recalled a golden age both on road and rail at The North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The line teamed up with classic car owners over the weekend to stage the Vintage Vehicle Weekend, providing passengers with displays of historic vehicles at stations along the route, at Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont.

Displays included miniature traction engines – such as Ken Harness at the helm of his Burrell Traction Engine , above – historic motorcycles and cars, ranging from Allards, built in the late 1940s, to more modern vehicles in the shape of the Ford Capri.Live music reminded passengers of the sounds of the 50s, 60s and 70s in between train departures and arrivals. It is the 17th year that this event has been held on the Moors Railway.

Volunteer Ian Wolstencroft said: "It wouldn't be possible without the continued support from both the railway and the groups and individuals who make the event what it is. Together, they lovingly keep all of these forms of transport going. It is truly magnificent and a joy to see."
