Steamy Autumn forecast as Mallard goes on tour

The world’s fastest locomotive, Mallard, will be going on tour down the East Coast Mainline in September.

More than 100,000 visitors have already flocked to the National Railway Museum, in York, to see Mallard during the 75th anniversary year of its speed record as part of July’s Great Gathering.

In the run up to the museum’s Autumn Great Gathering, the second time Mallard will meet its surviving sisters, the steam legend will star in a series of events.

As part of the Mallard 75 season Mallard will appear in Grantham, the place where the world speed record of 125.88 mph was set in 1938 on the downwards gradient of Stoke Bank, on September 8 and 9 at a Festival of Speed.

Next, the locomotive will return to the place of its birth, Doncaster, which will welcome Mallard home in time for its annual St Leger Festival. Mallard will be on display at Freightliner Ltd’s Railport depot on September 14 and 15 at a free event.

It will then join other locomotives to celebrate 160 years of Doncaster Works at Barrow Hill Roundhouse in Chesterfield, on September 28 and 29.

The railway museum’s Autumn Great Gathering in York takes place between October 26 and November 8.
