Steel giant casts its donation towards helping the homeless

THE Yorkshire Post's Communities in Need appeal has received another major boost in the run-up to Christmas with a massive charitable donation from a regional steel giant.

Sheffield steel-casting firm William Cook Holdings has pledged 15,000 to its local Community Foundation to set up an endowment fund which will support projects addressing homelessness and child deprivation in Yorkshire for years to come.

The Yorkshire Post is currently working alongside the Yorkshire Community Foundations to raise money for small grassroots charities and projects around the region.

Readers and businesses are being encouraged to donate money to a fighting fund to combat want and need throughout the region.

The donation by William Cook will be eligible for match-funding under the Government's Grassroots Grants programme, creating a fund pot worth almost 30,000.

Chairman Andrew Cook said: "William Cook is a globally successful firm, but still recognises its South Yorkshire roots. It has a strong commitment to local communities in South Yorkshire and I wanted to give back something to the local areas that have helped us achieve our business successes.

"This fund will provide long-term community support for vital groups and projects in the area that are helping to alleviate the problems faced by those living in extreme poverty.

"There are too many people who deserve help and do not get it. For successful firms not to offer help would be inexcusable.

"And the match-funding offers a powerful incentive to do something worthwhile."

Last week, it was revealed donations to the Yorkshire Post appeal had topped 100,000.

Pauline Grice, chief executive of South Yorkshire Community Foundation, said: "William Cook Holdings's donation is a shining example of just how important donations to the local community can be."
