Steelworker crushed to death at Yorkshire foundry

AN investigation was under way today after a steelworker was crushed to death at a Yorkshire foundry.

The Health and Safety Executive began an inquiry following the incident at the giant Forgemasters works in Sheffield's Lower Don Valley yesterday.

Police and firefighters were called to the steelworks, in Brightside Lane, at 11.10am.

According to reports, the man, who was in his 20s but has not been named, was crushed by a 67-tonne steel cast which fell from a crane and landed on him.

Fire crews freed the seriously injured worker and he was taken to the city's Northern General Hospital but he died in the early hours of this morning, South Yorkshire Police said.

The force said a joint investigation has been launched involving both the police and the Health and Safety Executive.

"During routine work in the evening of Wednesday June 16, a Forgemasters employee was taken to the Northern General Hospital. He was later pronounced dead during the early hours of Thursday June 17.

"Our thoughts are with the man's family, who have been informed."
