Steps taken to head off traffic chaos

TRAffic bosses say they are taking steps to make sure last week’s chaos on the roads is not repeated as Hull Fair comes to town.

The emergency closure of County Road North, along with roadworks on Park Street, Bricknell Avenue and Thwaite Street, in Cottingham, accidents and the jamming of a level crossing, saw long delays and frustration for motorists. There have been fears that this week could be worse as Walton Street closes for the fair, which gets around 500,000 visitors.

Graham Hall, assistant head of customer services at Hull Council, said they’d do all they could to improve traffic flow, adding: “I am advising motorists to expect delays, but hopefully not as long as last week.”

East Riding Council said pre-planned work by Northern Power Grid, in Cottingham, would be suspended from today.

Meanwhile Opposition councillors have called on Labour to find an “urgent” solution to the problem.

The chairman of Hull-based EYMS Group, Peter Shipp called for bus lanes to be extended to 12 hours a day.
