Stiles's World Cup medal to be sold

The former England and Manchester United midfielder is selling his 1966 medal in a collection of memorabilia from his career.

The medal is expected to fetch up to 150,000 when it goes under the hammer in Edinburgh tomorrow.

Other lots in the Nobby Stiles collection include his 1966 England cap, which is expected to sell for between 20,000 and 30,000, and the blue shirt he wore for Manchester United in the 1968 European Cup Final against Benfica.

Stiles is selling his mementoes because he felt he could not fairly split the collection between his three children.

Born in Collyhurst in Manchester in 1942, Stiles became one of only three Englishmen, alongside Bobby Charlton and Ian Callaghan, to win both the World Cup and the European Cup during his playing career.

The collection will go on public view at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh today.

Other items in the sale include the shirt worn by the 1966 Cup Final’s man of the match, Alan Ball, which he swapped with Stiles following the win.

Scottish sporting items up for sale include boxing legend Benny Lynch’s 1937 Flyweight Champion of Europe trophy, and a 1907-08 Scottish Cup Winner’s medal that once belonged to Celtic player David Hamilton.
