Stolen toad sculpture found abandoned

A giant toad sculpture has been found after being abandoned by thieves at the side of a busy road.

The fibreglass sculpture, one of 40 created to celebrate the life and work of the poet Philip Larkin, was discovered by Highways Agency staff in a layby off the A63, just a few miles away from Melton where it had gone missing, probably on Friday night.

It will have scratches painted over before being reinstalled at the Meltonwest business park.

Toad Manager Clare Huby said: "He's been somewhere between Friday night and either Monday evening or yesterday morning and we don't know where he's been.

"He has a few extra scratches, nothing major."

The idea for Larkin with Toads came from the poet and former Hull University librarian's two poems Toads and Toads Revisited.
