Stonehenge to open new visitor centre in winter

A long-awaited new visitor centre at Stonehenge will open ahead of the winter solstice, English Heritage has announced.

The new building, 1.5 miles from the Neolithic stones, will give visitors a 360 degree virtual experience of “standing in the stones”, and will house a gallery presenting theories about the site and showcasing prehistoric artefacts.

The visitor centre, which is part of a £27m transformation of the World Heritage Site and is situated out of sight of the stones, will open on December 18.

Almost 300 archaeological finds from the site, which have been loaned from a number of museums, will go on display to the public – many for the first time.
