Store move planned for post office

A POST OFFICE in Shafton, north east of Barnsley, could be set to move into a nearby convenience store in April.

Shafton Post Office, on High Street, is currently run by a temporary subpostmaster but Post Office Ltd has recently appointed a new, permanent subpostmaster.

Now, the company is planning to close the existing branch and instead offer a “Post Office Local” service from the Costcutter store about half a mile away.

The service, which would initially be trialled for 12 months, would be available during the same opening hours as the Costcutter store, which are Monday to Sunday from 6.30am to 9pm.

Field change adviser Liz Morgan said: “We believe that the relocation of Shafton Post Office and the introduction of a Post Office Local service is the best way to maintain service to the local community in the longer term.”

A final decision will be announced soon after the consultation period ends on March 30.
