Stranded angler in helicopter river rescue drama

STRANDED fishermen in a “great deal of distress” had to be rescued from the River Don in Doncaster by the police helicopter.

South Yorkshire Police’s air operations unit received a call at 7pm on Sunday from two anglers, one of whom had become stranded in the river.

A police spokesman said: “Using the helicopter’s thermal imaging camera, the crew were able to locate the men who appeared to be in a great deal of distress.”

The helicopter was with the men within seven minutes, but one angler had been stuck in waist-deep water for more than an hour by the time the emergency services arrived.

He was then dragged up the
riverbank to safety.
