Strangler jailed for attack on his wife

A man who attacked his wife with her own scarf after she refused him sex has been jailed indefinitely.

Talib Hussain was alleged to have made previous threats towards his wife Hamida, 42, while armed with a knife and a hammer and two days before the attack he allegedly said he would burn her with the hot oil she was using for cooking.

On November 17 last year Hussain, 50, demanded sex with his wife, but she refused because she was getting ready for prayers, Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday.

Prosecutor Richard Gioserano said Hussain went over to her bed and punched her twice in the face before picking her up and throwing her to the end of the bed.

"She was wearing a scarf around her neck," said Mr Gioserano. "The defendant took hold of it and pulled it tight and began to strangle her with it. She soon found she could not breathe and was in fact rendered unconscious."

When she came round she screamed for help. She suffered bruising to her neck, chest and face and bleeding into her eyes.

Hussain, of Oak Lane, Manningham, Bradford, pleaded guilty on the day of his trial to attempting to cause his wife grievous bodily harm with intent. He also admitted breaching a non-molestation order imposed following his arrest for the attack.

Judge Jonathan Rose jailed Hussain indefinitely for public protection. He must serve half of a six-year term before even being considered for release.`
