Streets closed in York as bomb squad called in

BOMB disposal experts were called to the centre of York this morning after a suspicious package was found in a financial services office.

North Yorkshire Police threw up a cordon around the offices of Aviva PLC on Rougier Street. Staff were evacuated to the nearby war memorial.

Occupants of nearby buildings were advised to stay inside.

Army bomb disposal experts arrived at the scene at around 8.50am and were examining the package.

Rougier Street and Station Road were closed to traffic and pedestrians, but buses were being allowed through the cordon.

Police said the actions were “a precautionary measure” and that the situation was “under control”.

Later this morning police lifted restrictions and re-opened roads.
