Strike set to go ahead today over jobs cuts

A PROTEST OVER compulsory redundancies will see every member of the NUT based at a Yorkshire training centre taking strike action today it was claimed yesterday.

Sue McMahon, Calderdale NUT divisional secretary said seven members of the NUT who form the School Improvement Team were based at the Heath Training Centre in Halifax. She said the staff, many of whom are former teachers were all facing redundancy following a restructuring last year which had resulted in a tripling of their workload.

“We are deeply dismayed that Calderdale Council sees fit to remove frontline service staff. It’s incredulous, (sic), that whilst the NUT remains willing to reach a negotiated settlement to avoid this dispute Calderdale Council are not prepared to sit down and talk. There are no jobs in the new structure for them.”

A council spokesman said no decision had been taken regarding compulsory redundancies and extensive consultations with the trade unions were ongoing.
