Striking images reflect an artist with a passion for print

THE work of an amateur artist who was well-known for making striking black and white prints his the subject of a new, retrospective exhibition in the centre of Sheffield.

City-born Paul Warrender, who died aged 63 last Christmas, had been exhibiting his work, which caught the eye of Karen Sherwood, the managing director of Hillsborough’s Cupola Art Gallery.

She has now curated an exhibition at Sheffield’s The Circle in Rockingham Lane, which is a centre for the voluntary sector which also hosts conferences and events.

Ms Sherwood said: “Paul was clearly a talented and sensitive artist. Themes in his work are by turns enigmatic, thought-provoking and full of insight.

“Often working in black and white, Paul created strong, bold images through his confident command of graphic styles.

“We believe this will be of interest to other printmakers as well as the general public. His work is delightful and very accessible.”

Mr Warrender’s wife Jude said she was delighted to see her husband’s work exhibited.

She added: “Paul was a quantity surveyor by day but art was one of his passions and he developed his skills all his life. I hope people in Sheffield will enjoy the show.”

The exhibition runs until January 31.
