Struggling George hit by competition planning new future as a takeaway

THE owner of a well-known but struggling pub in Hull has applied to turn it into a takeaway.

The George, on the corner of Walton Street – the site for Hull Fair – and Spring Bank West, is on the local list as a “good example of a traditional corner pub”.

An application for change of use submitted to Hull Council says the pub “has not been an economically viable business for many years now and has often had long periods of closure with new owners having little success in making the business a success.”

It adds: “This is partly down to its location and also because of the presence of the Walton Club to the rear, which provides drinks at a heavily-reduced prices due to subsidies and also regular entertainment. It has been let on a three month temporary lease in order to stop vandalism until planning has been granted.”

The latest statistics from the Campaign for Real Ale suggest
18 pubs a week across the UK
are closing owing to low consumer confidence, inflation-busting rises in the price of beer and competition from supermarkets. Two members of the public have objected so far to the change of use. One said: “It’s a guaranteed failure. If this gets approved a historical place will be lost, local business will suffer and six months later it will be vacant again.”
