Stuarts commemorated in stamps

Dr David Connell of the Burton Constable Foundation was at the launch of the Royal Mail's latest special stamps, the fourth in its Kings and Queens series celebrating the Royal houses of England.

The imposing surroundings of Burton Constable Hall in East Yorkshire was the setting for the launch of the stamps featuring the Stuarts, one of whom, King Charles I, is shown on the right. The hall was home to the Constable family for over 400 years and has links with two Stuart kings. Sir Henry Constable was created first Lord of Dunbar by James I and fought in support of Charles I in the first Civil War.

The seven stamps which go on sale today feature portraits of the monarchs, who ruled from 1603 until 1714. King James VI of Scotland became the first Stuart monarch when he became James I of England.

Both he and his son Charles I appear on two first class stamps, while a portrait of the last Stuart, Anne, completes the series.
