THE Green, one of the world’s most sustainable student buildings, has been sold for over £40m to a private Kuwait-based fund.
The building was sold by The Hayaat Group, a private investment company headquartered in Abu Dhabi.
The Green, which provides accommodation for 1,026 students at the University of Bradford, was conceived in 2005 under the Labour Government’s Urban Regeneration Scheme to regenerate brownfield sites.
It was specifically designed to set a blueprint for sustainable living, encouraging students to adapt lifestyles that save energy and reduce waste.
Central heating and hot water are powered by solar panels, the buildings are efficiently insulated to reduce heat loss, rain water is collected, purified and used for a variety of purposes and all energy and water usage is monitored and metered so each student knows exactly how much they are using.
In its two years of operation, The Green has consumed 25 per cent less energy than equivalent student accommodation elsewhere in the UK.
