Student dies in fall from hotel balcony

A student from a Yorkshire university has died after he plunged from a hotel balcony while travelling in Nepal.

James Raphael is understood to have been in the country as part of a backpacking trip with friends after taking time out from studying at Leeds University.

The 24-year-old, from Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, died after falling from four floors up at the Hotel Royal Grand in a tourist district of Kathmandu, according to reports.

It is believed he had returned from a night out with friends when he ended up locked out of his room and trapped on the balcony. He tried to climb in through a nearby window but slipped and fell to the ground.

The Foreign Office confirmed his death but have not given an exact date of when the incident took place. He was taking a year out from a philosophy course at Leeds to travel around Asia.
