Student fund inquiry

MPS are to investigate the impact of a fund designed to support poor students staying in education beyond the age of 16 which has now been scrapped by the Government.

The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) paid up to 30 a week to students whose family income was less than 20,817. Last month college bosses from across Yorkshire and the country criticised the coalition for their decision to scrap it.

Now the Education Select Committee, chaired by Yorkshire MP Graham Stuart (Beverley and Holderness) is to hold an inquiry looking at the impact of the EMA and what preparations are needed to raise the education participation leaving age to 18.
