A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said he died at the scene.

The road was sealed off between the University roundabout and Rockingham Street as investigators tried to piece together what happened.

Later yesterday, a spokeswoman said: "Police are appealing for witnesses after a male pedestrian was in collision with a South Yorkshire Police panda car and died at the scene.

"It is believed the police car was assisting the ambulance service with a priority incident at the time of the collision," she added.

"Our investigators have met with them and have begun the work to examine all the circumstances surrounding the incident in the hope that we can identify how and why this tragedy happened."
