Students learn lesson by passing financial knowledge on to infants

SIXTH-form economics students have been giving lessons on managing money to youngsters in a nearby infants school.

Pupils from St Aidan's and St John Fisher's associated sixth-form in Harrogate have taught a group of 73 six and seven-year-olds at Oatlands School.

The infant school's headteacher Elizabeth Robson, said: "This project has been an exciting way of giving our children an introduction to the importance of saving and working with money – both vital life skills. It has been great for them to have this delivered by the sixth-form students in such a fun and interesting manner."

The lessons were part of a course run by Engage Mutual which challenged the sixth-form students to take what they had learnt and pass it on to youngsters in a fun way.

St Aidan's business liaison officer, Marian Farrer, said: "This is a fantastic example of collaborative and community partnerships, working to generate reciprocal benefits to all parties.

"Our students have hugely gained from their relationship with Engage Mutual and their understanding has been reinforced by this challenge to share their financial knowledge in a meaningful way to much younger children."

The sixth-form students have completed the foundation in financial services and money management – a nine-week course covering issues such as budgeting, cash flow, debt, mortgages and loans, protection and investments.
