Students ‘need a stronger voice’

STUDENT union officials from Sheffield University are set to meet with councillors in the city, to try and forge better links between students and the wider community.

Senior council leaders and councillors representing popular student residential areas, such as Broomhill and Crookes, have been invited to the meeting at Sheffield University students’ union building in Western Bank on Thursday, October 13.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg – whose Sheffield Hallam constituency is home to much of the city’s student population – and Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield have also been invited to attend the event.

Students’ union welfare officer Matthew Denton said the meeting next month would be an opportunity to build new relationships, both with Sheffield Council and with the city as a whole.

He said: “The University of Sheffield students’ union has 50,000 members. We contribute a lot to the city and we need a bigger voice.

“As an organisation, we can mobilise a great body of people and there’s a lot we could do by working much more closely with the council.”
