Students seal away a snapshot of life at Ripon boarding school in 2016

Students at a grammar school in North Yorkshire have sealed away a snapshot of current life for future pupils to open in 25 years' time.

Girls at Ripon Grammar School (RGS) joined students from boarding schools across the country to simultaneously bury a time capsule.

The event is to mark National Boarding Week and the Golden Jubilee of the Boarding Schools’ Association, and it is hoped the capsule will show future boarders what life is like in 2016.

Student Amy Goodwin, 13, of Potto, included an account of boarding life for girls in Johnson House at RGS, which included information on current affairs including the EU referendum and the girls’ predictions for what the future will be like.

“We all agree that technology will have moved on loads,” she wrote in a message to the finders.

People think you travel around on hover boards and all own smart watches. We hope there will be world peace and that the boarding house doesn’t have the same computers.”

Amy ended her account: “My advice for enjoying boarding is just to be yourself. Have fun, enjoy life and stay true to yourself. Goodbye to the people of the future.”

Included in the time capsule are items to reflect school life.

A school tie, a photograph of Johnson House, dinner menus, a Year 8 timetable, a school calendar and an account by the head of house Ruth Smith were among other items.

The girls also added a loom band bracelet with instructions on how to make it, a tea bag, photocopied bank notes and a full set of coins, as well as a page of logos for well-known brands, stamps and sweets.

They acknowledged their area with a Yorkshire Air Ambulance pin, the school’s chosen charity, a tourist guide and a Ripon Hornblower wooden lucky penny.

Housemistress Helen Pickard added: “The BSA asked all boarding schools to join in and Ripon Grammar School is very happy to have played its part.”
