Studio doors open in town to reveal couple’s artistic talents

A HUSBAND and wife team will be throwing their doors open to visitors this weekend as part of the Reveal Open Studios event.

Rob and Lorna Soar are the first artists in Howden to exhibit their work as part of the annual event.

The pair have been pursuing various artistic interests since meeting more than a decade ago.

Visitors to their home on 122 Hailgate will find a house crammed with artwork. Mr Soar, a chartered surveyor for Leonard Cheshire Disability, works in acrylics and his biggest commission to date has been two paintings for the Norwegian finance company Skagen.

As well as painting, Mrs Soar makes brooches and beaded spiders and the pair also make soap using traditional methods.

Mrs Soar said: “When people meet us they are quite surprised because Rob is shy and yet his paintings come across as extroverted. Mine are the opposite – maybe it is our inner persons coming out. We’ve both had commissions but I would say Rob’s work has taken off more than mine.

“His is a Clarice Cliff style with bright colours and black outlines.”

Their studio will be open from 10am to 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
