Submarine's mementoes go under the hammer

Two rare wartime mementoes linked to a famous British submarine that were found by auctioneers looking through a Selby Council depot will go under the hammer next week.

The 68-year-old copies of the HMS Sturgeon's badge were found covered in dust by CJM Asset Management, who were asked to clear a council property maintenance depot.

HMS Sturgeon made the first successful World War Two torpedo attack and was later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck battleship.

The long-range patrol submarine was adopted by Selby Rural District Council and Selby Urban District Council in March 1942, and each was presented with a large copy of the ship's badge mounted on a shield.

Paul Cooper, of CJM, said: "It is obviously very unusual to have things like these come on to the market, so we would expect there to be quite a lot of interest from collectors."

The badges will be auctioned in Scunthorpe on Tuesday.
