Success for city's Fairtrade campaign

CAMPAIGNERS hope the whole of North Yorkshire could soon be awarded Fairtrade status after Ripon became the latest city to come on board.

The historic cathedral city has been awarded Fairtrade status after a 12-month campaign by an action group of residents, businesses and churches.

Ripon is the latest in a long line of North Yorkshire cities, towns and villages to be awarded the status, including Harrogate, Northallerton and York, after showing a commitment to promoting Fairtrade.

And following the latest community campaign to achieve the accolade, it is hoped more will follow suit. Ripon Fairtrade Action Group chair Linda Scannell said: "We have put a lot of work in to get here and the whole city is delighted at the achievement.

"It is a real boost for the area and the more we can persuade others to come on board, the better."
