Success on a plate

A three-day auction of VIP numberplates got under way in Yorkshire yesterday – showing the way to a man's wallet is through a personalised registration.

Bidding at the DVLA Personalised Registrations’ autumn auction at the Rudding Park Hotel, near Harrogate, sent prices soaring, surprising even the organisers.

Over the three days, 1,500 personalised registrations will be up for grabs including a “star” plate: 10 O, being held above by Leanne Harker from SMA in Leeds, which is running the auction. It boasts the highest reserve at 10,000 and is expected to sell for a six-figure sum.

Yesterday 1.3m was raised in a single day’s trading, with all the money going to the Treasury.

The biggest seller was 99 A at 26,500 (reserve price just 3,000). It was snapped by a Birmingham pharmacist for his 11-year-old daughter.
