Summer crackdown on road speed

A 51-year-old motorcyclist clocked doing 120mph on the A64 bypass has become one of the first casualties of a speeding purge in North Yorkshire this summer.

Police stopped the Kawasaki rider from Stocksbridge, Sheffield, who will face a driving ban when he appears before Scarborough magistrates.

Police are to target speeders in residential areas during the school summer holidays as part of the North Yorkshire 95 Alive summer drink drive road safety campaign.

North Yorkshire County Council Road Safety Officer Susan Gallagher said: "Operation Siren shows that drivers are still speeding. It is vital drivers consider the safety of children and elderly people who live in our area. Speeding and drink driving are proven to be major factors in road related deaths and injuries."

The Partnership said the number of people that are injured or die on the roads can be reduced by following simple rules such as staying within the speed limit and not being distracted when driving through built-up areas.
