Summer launch for Christmas drive

TOURISM chiefs in York unveiled plans yesterday for a Christmas marketing drive to attract thousands of visitors.

Officials from Visit York announced the blueprint more than four months ahead of the festive season as they revealed a comprehensive guide would be published to showcase a series of events in the city starting in mid-November.

The summer launch of the Christmas campaign has been timed to provide a long lead-in to the marketing drive for the festive season.

Tourism is one of the pillars of York's economy, and thousands of visitors spent about 50m over the Christmas period last year.

Visit York's chief executive, Gillian Cruddas, said: "York's Christmas celebrations start in November and carry on every week up until Christmas day.

"We're confident that more than ever before York is offering the very best Christmas festival, with so much variety and plenty of good value offers."

Events include carol singing at York Castle Museum and the ever popular St Nicholas Fayre, as well as a Winter Wonderland event at the National Railway Museum.

There will also be the internationally acclaimed Early Music Christmas festival.
