Superbike star leads city’s Easter Egg Run

SUPERBIKE star James Toseland led hundreds of motorcyclists through the streets of Sheffield yesterday, as they rode to the city’s Children’s Hospital in the annual Easter Egg Run.

The huge parade of bikers, some in fancy dress, travelled from the South Yorkshire Police operations complex on Europa Link through Attercliffe, the Wicker, West Bar to Weston Park, where they were greeted by young patients waving from the hospital windows.

Mr Toseland, accompanied by his fiancee, singer Katie Melua, then joined the charity convoy to give out chocolate eggs to children spending their Easter break in the hospital.

The former world superbike champion, who has been supporting the charity for several years, said: “The Children’s Hospital Charity is a cause close to my heart and I like to do whatever I can to support the fantastic work of the hospital and its staff.

“Every time I visit I am always made to feel so welcome by the staff, families and the young patients.

“I love chatting to the children and always come away feeling inspired by their bravery and courage.”

The annual Easter Egg Run is organised by the Three Shires Honda Owners Club with support from South Yorkshire Police.

Last year around 500 riders took part in the event, raising more than £5,000 for the charity through bucket collections on the day.

It is thought that the number of riders this year may have broken last year’s record, and the amount of money raised is still to be totted up.

Simon Athey, senior fundraiser at The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “James is a great supporter of the charity and really lifts the spirits of patients and their families during his visits to the hospital.”

The event is open to any biker who wishes to take part, if they make a £2 donation to The Children’s Hospital Charity.
