Supermarket petrol price war lifts gloom for hard-pressed motorists

Motorists will be able to buy cheaper petrol at supermarkets from today.

Four leading supermarkets announced they were cutting the price of their petrol, with Morrisons also knocking 1p a litre off its diesel. The reductions follow cuts in the price of supermarket diesel announced last week.

First to announce reductions yesterday was Asda which said that from today it would be reducing the price of its petrol by up to 2p a litre. This will mean Asda customers will pay no more than 133.7p a litre for petrol from this morning, with Asda diesel staying at 137.7p a litre.

Second to declare was Sainsbury’s which said it was also introducing a petrol cut of up to 2p a litre from tomorrow. Then Morrisons said that from today it would be cutting up to 3p a litre off petrol and 1p a litre off diesel.

The fourth supermarket to announce cuts was Tesco which is bringing in a cut of up to 2p a litre on its petrol from today.

AA president Edmund King said: “We predicted these cuts last week, with oil down to its lowest level in a month and the pound gaining on the dollar after its recent fall. This is perhaps another glimmer of sunlight for drivers after a hard, wet, pot-holed and expensive winter of driving.”

The RAC said the price cuts would be widely welcomed.
