Supermarket terror as car smashes through café window

A FATHER was enjoying breakfast in a supermarket cafe when a car crashed through the window and pushed him 30ft into the store.

Terrified Ryan Parker believed he was going to die when an out of control Mercedes trapped him against tables.

The elderly woman driver lost control of the automatic car and as she panicked the wheels were left spinning as black smoke poured from the vehicle.

Mr Parker, 25, a glazier, is still in shock after his brush with death at the Morrison's store in Illingworth, Halifax.

"I saw a car pulling into the disabled spot and it came straight through the window," he said.

"The car had me pinned against tables and rammed me back 30ft. I could not move. I was thinking 'This is it. I'm dead'.

"There was black smoke and the wheels were spinning. I was thinking if she lets go of the brake she is going to kill me.

"Somehow, I managed to jump out. It was only 30 or 40 seconds but seemed like a lifetime."

Mr Parker, who has a three-year-old daughter, suffered cuts to his arm from the shattered glass and bruising to his stomach.

He was in and out of consciousness and taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, but is now back home in Halifax although still in shock.

His friend David Sutcliffe, 33, a technician from Halifax, who was also having breakfast when the smash happened, said: "I made a split-second decision and jumped out of the way.

"The car broke through the window and took Ryan 20-30ft back into the cafe. I thought I was watching my mate go to to his death.

"There were a few other people around and thankfully they turned the ignition off."

Morrison's first-aiders helped Mr Parker and the driver before the emergency services arrived.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital where she was treated for shock.
