Superstore set to show off its latest plans for expansion

REVISED plans for an extension to Sainsbury's supermarket in Archer Road, Sheffield, are set to go on show to the public later this week.

Following months of consultation, beginning with a public exhibition in July 2009, the supermarket giant submitted a planning application for store improvements to Sheffield Council. Consultation has since continued and "significant" amendments have now been proposed.

Sainsbury's is to hold a two-day in-store information event on Fridayfrom noon to 7pm and on Saturday from 10am to 2pm.

Christian Wakelin, regional development surveyor for Sainsbury's, said: "This information event will give people the chance to view the final plans and see how we have responded to their feedback since we launched the extension proposals last July.

"Our Archer Road store has traded successfully for 25 years, and stocks a range of food and general non-food items such as clothing, homeware and electrical items. A larger store will enable us to offer greater customer choice, wider aisles, more storage space and a generally improved shopping environment."

As well as 22,000 sq ft of additional retail space, Sainsbury's proposals include a larger restaurant, new windows along Archer Road, enhanced landscaping, new cycle racks, a new car park with an additional 66 spaces, and improved pedestrian and cycle access to the store.

Mr Wakelin added: "Concern has been raised about increased traffic and deliveries at the revised store, but there would not be a big increase in either.

"Our figures show that at both weekday and Saturday peak times, there would be an increase of just one vehicle, in each direction, every two minutes. We expect the store will require no more than one additional HGV delivery per day."
