Supertram looks to the past for modern vehicle livery

OLDER residents of Sheffield will recognise the new livery being used on one of the city's modern trams after the company which runs the service decided to celebrate its success.

Sheffield Supertram bosses said they wanted to run a tram painted in the colours of the Sheffield Corporation to "celebrate the important role" trams had played in the life of the city.

October marks half a century since the last Sheffield Corporation tram made its final journey through the city streets before the old tram tracks were covered in favour of buses.

Public transport giant Stagecoach, which runs Sheffield's modern tram system said it wanted to mark this occasion and "the enormous contribution trams had made over the years to the city's profile."

The former Sheffield Corporation livery of azure blue and cream, which now transforms tram 120, was launched this week and will remain in service until the end of the year.

Stagecoach Light Rail managing director Tim Shoveller, Supertram general manager Glenn Stocks and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive director of customer experience David Young put the tram on show.

Mr Shoveller said: "Throughout the years, trams have played a hugely important role in Sheffield and they continue to do so. We're pleased to be able to combine old and new with this new livery and hope people will enjoy using this tram as it serves the city."

Stagecoach Group began operating Sheffield Supertram in 1997 and the system now carries more than 15 million passengers a year, over three tram routes.
