Support service targets isolated

A NEW telephone service is being launched to reach out to the most isolated people in the East Riding.

Volunteers are needed to man the phones, as part of the service to be run by Hornsea United Reform Church.

The church says is it “acutely aware” of the number of isolated people in the area, but that many share the desire to make the community a more caring place.

The service, jointly funded by the church and East Riding Council, will regularly call people to build up supportive relationships.

Organisers say they will take referrals from residents and organisations, but make sure that anyone who is referred to them is happy to be included.

The Rev Jamie Kissack said: “We have become acutely aware of the number of people in our community who feel isolated for all kinds of reasons. We are also aware that there are many people in the community who want to help make it a more caring place.

“We hope that this project will bring these two sides of our community life together and will be a really valuable resource to help reduce this sense of isolation.”

Hornsea URC is looking for voluntary organisations, churches and statutory agencies to get involved.

They are also looking for volunteers who are prepared to undergo training and work as part of the team.

Coun Jackie Cracknell said: “Due to the largely rural nature of the East Riding, isolation is a real concern and the council is keen to support residents in any way possible.

“The volunteer telephone support network, which is to be run by Hornsea URC is an innovative way in supporting our rural communities and as well as providing funding the council would urge anyone interested in volunteering to get in contact.”

Anybody interested in the project is invited to a launch event at 10am on October 23, at Hornsea URC Community Hall, New Road, Hornsea.
