Surprise windfall could be in store

ALMOST half a million pounds in Premium Bond prizes is currently unclaimed by more than 8,000 people in South Yorkshire.

One man, who has only £3 invested in Premium Bonds, is still due to receive £1,000 after failing to claim his prize back in April 1979.

There are also eight more winners in South Yorkshire who have won either £1,000 or £500.

There is no time limit for claiming prizes and each unclaimed prize is held until the winner can be tracked down.

The oldest unclaimed prize in South Yorkshire dates back to November 1957, for the sum of £25.

Jill Waters, operations manager at National Savings and Investments, said: “It is likely that many of the winners are unaware or have forgotten that they have Premium Bonds.

“Prizes often become unclaimed as a result of people moving house, or forgetting that bonds have been bought for them as a child, or executors are unaware the bonds are held when someone dies.

“By opting to manage your Premium Bonds online you could reduce the risk of missing out on prizes as they can be paid directly into your bank account.”
